Our church would like to do another cookbook in honor of our 90th Anniversary which will be on 1/9/2011 . We would like for people to submit their favorite recipe and any stories you have about things that have happened in your faith journey that you wish to share.
Recipes should include all ingredients, how many people the recipe serves and one of the following categories: Main dish, dessert, drink, vegetable, salad, snack, or bread. If you have the nutritional value , you can also include that.
Please give your recipes to Linda or Joyce, or you may place them in

MISSION and OUTREACH

Our next Home Van evening downtown will be June 17. We meet behind the Bo Diddley plaze at about 5:45. You can help by coming to help serve, by providing food (sandwiches of meat/cheese no condiments, or pbj), bananas, bottled water, cookies/brownies, hardboiled eggs, crackers/cheese, etc. Please wrap foods in individual bags. We also need all sizes of batteries, small candles, new socks, small tents, old suitcases, and plastic grocery bags. Last time we had leftover sandwiches, so maybe we should concentrate on chips, crackers, KoolAid, socks (ALWAYS requested!), and personal care items.

Our next evening meal at St. Francis House is scheduled for July 25.

We continue to work on a brand-new edition of our church cookbook. We will have a place in the vestibule for you to pick up a recipe form to complete and return (or you can email your recipes to Joyce or Linda).

Thanks to everyone who help with Mission and Outreach. We are so blessed by God so we can share with others in need.

YOUTH IN-SYNC

As we develop our friendships and invite others to join us, we the youth of FCC are excited about the future. We had a great time at the O’Connor’s Farm and met some other teens from the Gainesville area. We ask that you, our Spiritual Family, pray for us and our endeavors to live for Christ and share his love and message.

Thoughts from Thom

These thoughts are being written before leaving on vacation. Consequently, they are words of anticipation. Many of you have also expressed a hope for this time away to be restful. Driving to Ohio and back does not seem, at first glance, to be much of a time of rest. But we are looking forward to seeing our sons, Cameron and Kyle, and visiting with Dona's family in the Buckeye State, and being away from our regular routines.

As Christians, we live in this world with a hope for better things yet to come. We expect some to occur in this life and some in the next. Living as we do between worlds, we can easily become discouraged by things happening around us, for example, the oil spill in the Gulf. Even as a community of faith, we can be adversely affected by such anxious times. Let us look forward to tomorrow with a growing sense of hope. Let us not be co-opted by the negative voices around us.

God has promised rest to his people (see Joshua 1:13). It is not a time for sitting on our hands but a time of being about the Lord's work. God will provide the necessary rest. That is the promise of faith. The words of Joshua 21:45 challenge us to accept the truthfulness of God's promises as we look forward to tomorrow, “Not one of all the good promises that the Lord has made to the house of Israel has failed; all came to pass.” Join me somewhere on the road to find out why.

Mission and Outreach

Gratefully, we can report that many of Carl and Eline McDonough's meals are being provided by agencies now. But Barbara DeBarr is encouraging us to visit them - they would love to spend some time with you!
Pantry items (canned and boxed food) are still being collected for Gainesville Community Ministries. Personal care products are being collected for the Gainesville Home Van. Empty prescription bottles (please remove the name label) are being collected for Helping Hands Clinic (they also need clothing, socks and shoes). Thank you to everyone who is helping with these causes that benefit the needy in our community. The need is great and the numbers of those in need is growing so you help is really appreciated.
Our next St. Francis House meal is scheduled for July 25 . We will have a sign-up sheet in the vestibule. We always have a great time serving and sharing a meal, so plan to join us then. We meet there at 5:30 pm .
The next Home Van evening downtown date is August 19 . We will meet behind the Bo Diddley plaza at about 5:45. You can help by coming to help serve, by providing food (sandwiches of meat/cheese with no condiments or pbj), bananas, bottled water, cookies/brownies, hardboiled eggs , crackers/cheese, etc. Please wrap foods in individual bags. We also need all sizes of batteries, small candles, new socks, small tents, old suitcases, and plastic grocery bags. Last time we needed more sandwiches, but chips, crackers, KoolAid, socks (ALWAYS REQUESTED!!) and personal care items are always welcomed.
We are happy to report that we have received several recipes for our new church cookbook edition. Please continue to complete the recipe forms (in vestibule) or email your recipe to Joyce or Linda. Blessings to everyone who helps Mission and Outreach; we are blessed so we can bless others.

JULY SERMONS

We begin the month with our worship of God and our national observance of the Fourth of July. For Alexander Campbell, this day was very special and the subject of his annual sermon on Independence Day. The calendar invites us to step outside the lectionary and consider what it means to be a Christian and also a citizen.

The remainder of the month will find us in the Gospel of Luke as we listen to Jesus teaching us about life as a would-be follower. Come to our worship of God expecting God to show up and be present with us. In preparation for our worship, prayerfully read and study the following scriptures.

July 4 - “God, Apple Pie, and the American Way”

Text: Proverbs 14:34

July 11 - “Living the Right Answer”

Text: Luke 10:25-37

July 18 - “Living with Distractions”

Text: Luke 10:38-42

July 25 - “Living into Prayerfulness”

Text: Luke 11:1-13

Post-It Notes from God

Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass;

it’s about learning to dance in the rain!

Don’t let your worries get the best of you -

Remember Moses started out as a basket case.

Many folks want to serve God but only in an advisory capacity.

It is easier to preach ten sermons than it is to live one.

Some people are kind, polite, and sweet-spirited –

until you try to sit in their pew.

When you get to your wit’s end, you’ll find God lives there.

Opportunity may knock only once;

But temptation bangs on the door forever.

God Himself doesn’t propose to judge a man until after he is dead,

So why should you?

Prayer is not giving God instructions; it’s reporting for duty.

Peace starts with a smile.

Coincidence happens when God chooses to remain anonymous.

God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage.

You can tell how big a person is by what it takes to discourage him.

The Will of God never takes you where the

Grace of God cannot protect you.

The Valley of the Shadow of death is just that – a shadow.

Fear Not – God is with you!
